Travel Report: Saigon Kitsch – Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
May 2018. Just about everyone travelling Vietnam will pick up a bunch of t-shirts along the way to commemorate their trip. Go to any of the big markets and such items are dirt cheap and often come with further discounts if you buy in bulk. But most of the time it’s the same design over and over again and you get exactly what you pay for in terms of quality. Right enough nearly all my Vietnam T-shirts have fallen apart just four months since I left the country. If you’re looking for some genuinely different designs and you’re happy to put your hand in your pocket for finer materials, look no further than Saigon Kitsch, a French-run shop specializing in reproduction propaganda pieces.
May 2018. Saigon Kitsch is one of a handful of places to come for quality propaganda prints, albeit not quite on the grand scale of Hanoi’s amazing Old Propaganda Posters & Paintings. It’s much pricier than its Hanoi counterpart too, with fixed prices.
May 2018. I love their twist on Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Men & Little Miss characters. I’d read about these in advance and had my heart set on a Mr. Banh Mi shirt. But alas they had run out and I was forced to come up with a plan B.
May 2018. While I was looking I did come across a Mr. Banh Mi mouse mat, which fit perfectly into my little Mac bag. It set me back about 180.000 VND (£6/€6.70/$7.80).
May 2018. After much deliberation I settled on this cool Vietnamese coffee t-shirt. The Saigon Kitsch girls spoke decent English and were helpful in getting my size dug out of the storage room. I paid around 453.000 VND (£15/€16.80/$19.40). In addition to t-shirts and propaganda prints, Saigon Kitsch also does jigsaws, mugs, coasters, stationery and all the usual forms of souveniry tat. Located at 33 Ð Ton That Thiep, it’s open daily from 09:00-22:00 and well worth a look, even if you’re not buying.
