Travel Report: Dr. Hung & Associates Dental Center – Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
May 2018. It was with more than a little trepidation that I approached the reception desk of Dr. Hung & Associates. Vietnam is a popular destination for westerners in need of quality, low-cost dental work, but boy do you have to do your research and make sure you don’t hand your mouth over to some unqualified, inexperienced shyster with a rusty drill. Time and time again my investigations threw up a recommended name: Dr. Hung & Associates, aka HD Dental Center. So I threw their address into Apple Maps and headed on over there without an appointment. The woman behind the desk didn’t blink. Having filled out a short, uncomplicated form, I jumped in the elevator with her and shot up a couple of floors to get my free check up.
May 2018. “Have you flown over here for dental work too?” asked the nervous mousey woman sitting next to me on the sofa. “Oh… no, not really” I replied, “I just figured I should probably get my annual checkup done while I’m here. How about you?” There was a brief pause, but one that was long enough to see the poor woman was absolutely petrified. “Oh I basically need a new mouth” she grimaced. “Mr. Thomas!” came a voice and I shot up to follow a trio of dimunitive women down the corridor.
May 2018. Everyone spoke a decent level of English and was incredibly polite and diligent, patiently talking me through every step of the check and taking plenty of time to show me the evidence of their findings. I already knew I needed at least two fillings, but was slightly perturbed to hear that there were actually three and one would require laser treatment for an exposed nerve.
May 2018. My dentist that afternoon was Dr. Duy Tan Thai, a calm, softly spoken 26-year-old Vietnamese man from Danang. He’d studied at Ho Chi Minh’s University Of Medicine and his English was flawless. I don’t think I’ve ever been given so much information about the treatment I was receiving. I particularly liked the way he highlighted the stark contrast between the sensitivity I’d been experiencing with my exposed nerve “Can you feel this?” “YES, I can!!!” and then after he’d worked his magic: “How about now?” “Nope, absolutely nothing!”
May 2018. I was in the centre for about two and a half hours in total, mainly due to the meticulous, unrushed nature of the service. I had three fillings, the laser treatment and some cleaning/polishing for good measure. My final bill came to 3 million Dong (£97/€113/$130). The breakdown of this worked out at $60 for the three fillings, $50 for laser treatment and $20 for the cleaning. It was, without a doubt, the most positive dental experience I’ve ever had.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Hung & Associates if you’re in HCM and need some work done. They’re located at 244 Cong Quynh Street and open from 08:30-19:00 (Mon-Sat) 09:00-12:00 on Sundays.
