Travel Report: Dee Light Bakery – Balham, London.
May 2019. It was another sunny morning in Tooting Bec and Henry, The Fairy and I were sniffing out breakfast options. Breaking tradition, I decided to give Walker Wyatt Coffee a rest and try a new local café. A big decision, and one that made me feel just a little bit dirty for turning my back on the usual flat white, pastry and window view of Tooting Bec Station. It was Henry who suggested the playfully named Dee Light Bakery, an Independent Australian owned café on Ritherdon Road. Happily, there were instantaneous good vibes with its south facing outdoor terrace, where one lady was already soaking up the morning sunshine.
May 2019. These positive first impressions blossomed further inside with the friendly women behind the counter and a tantalising array of handsome breakfast options. And yes, there’s a separate section for Gluten and wheat free stuff. Dee-Light-ful! Sorry.
Pushing the calorie count calculation to the back of my mind, I dove in with a latte and a pain au chocolat, while The Fairy opted for a Danish and a Mocha. I was also encouraged to see that Dee Light Bakery passed the brown sugar test, always a sign that a coffee place knows its shit.
May 2019. Things were admittedly a bit hectic that morning at Dee Light Bakery. I like my cafes to be on the sleepy side, but we’d timed our arrival for the morning rush. So there were people frantically ducking in and out and kids scurrying around the place in their school uniforms. Thankfully it wasn’t too long before it all calmed down and Henry was able to melt into his morning work routine.
May 2019. At some point a few of the Dee Light team branched off to work on the lunchtime orders of sandwiches, rolls and baguettes. Tuna salad… cheese, ham and Branston pickle… I promised myself next time I was in town I’d drop by and try one. The lady fishing ham out of the tub is Dee, the bakery’s award-winning owner. She opened the café in 2011 and is a familiar face at London food festivals.
July 2019. My most recent visit to Dee Light Bakery was to catch up with my old friend Dr. Phil. We hadn’t seen each other in fifteen and a half years (!) since we parted ways in India, so it was a wonderful morning reminiscing on those old adventures, catching up with each other’s lives and sharing our future plans. A brilliant addition to the Dee Light memory bank!
July 2019. Dee Light Bakery is a great option for a drink and a bite if you’re in the Balham/Tooting Bec area. They also host parties and do baking and cooking classes. You can find them on Ritherdon Road in a row of trendy, independent stores, just a five minute walk from Tooting Bec Station. For more info, have a look at their snazzy website.
