Travel Report: Hiking from Nature Beach to Coconut Beach, Koh Rong.

Hike from Nature Beach to Coconut Beach Koh Rong Cambodia

December 2015. After a day lazing about on Koh Rong, Wonderboy and I decided to go hiking from Nature Beach to Coconut Beach, a neighbouring resort. We’d heard that Coconut Beach is one of the island’s most impressive stretches of sand and home to a stunning bay of aquamarine water.

The wild, unpaved trail starts right at the end of Nature Beach, just beyond the last chalet. From there it twists and turns for about two kilometres, through light woodland, gravelly inclines and a few dense jungle paths. Armed with some bottles of water and enough suntan lotion to drown a large tiger, we pushed on with much enthusiasm. But boy oh boy it was a viciously hot afternoon.

There were no resting stations along the way and not even a spot of shade to duck into. If I could give one piece of advice, I’d say bring a hat! It’s amazing neither of us got seriously burnt. Don’t worry about getting lost though, the little wooden signs keep popping up here and there to put your mind at ease. Furthermore, the entire trail is more or less a straight shoot.

The bugs are a bit of a nuisance and some of them are unsettlingly large and miscellaneous in breed. I also remember seeing some colorful birds floating by overhead and a selection of lizards and iguanas like this one. It was absolutely silent on that trail as we closed in on Coconut Beach. And we didn’t meet a single soul along the way, not even some mad dogs to go with us two Englishmen.

It was a huge relief when Coconut Beach’s handsome hardwood bungalows finally came into view. The village sits in a beautiful, green clearing surrounded by thick vegetation. Admiring it for a moment, we subsequently continued along the trail that would soon lead to the beach. Wonderboy and I had braved sweltering afternoon temperatures to get here, but had it all been worth it?

This is so awesome Leighton but I don’t see any coconuts. Perhaps, you could plant some for them. Haha!
