Travel Report: The Pavilion Hotel – Shenzhen, China.

The Pavilion Hotel Shenzhen China

February 2018. I’ve always been pretty relaxed about accommodation when I’m on the road. Sometimes I’ll fork out for somewhere nice, other times I’m happy to slum it in basic guesthouses or hostels. But when we got to Shenzhen Wonderboy found himself so disillusioned with our first night at Star Whisper Spacecraft Hotel that he promptly booked himself a luxurious double in the swanky Pavilion Hotel on Huaqiang North Road!

February 2018. Located right across the street from Shenzhen’s world famous Huaqiangbei Electronics District, The Pavilion Hotel is easy to find, has a great location and, joy of all joys, the woman at reception actually spoke English!

And so Wonderboy was swiftly checked in with no complications, which felt especially refreshing after the trials and tribulations of recent weeks, including the absolute farce of Rio Hotel in Macau, quite simply the worst hotel check in experience I’ve had in twenty years of global travel!

February 2018. The Pavilion Hotel’s facilities are amazing! While Wonderboy was getting checked in I went to check out (boom boom) the tastefully decorated ground floor restaurant and coffee shop with its palm trees, glass tables, leather chairs and black piano. On the upper floors there’s an in-house bar, Chinese Fusion Restaurant, a fitness centre, spa and sauna. As Wonderboy’s guest that day I was also able to join him for a swim in the large, indoor heated pool.

February 2018. The Pavilion Hotel’s rooms aren’t half bad either. If you’re really high maintenance you can even order The Butler Service, though that proved a step too far even for Wonderboy. I’m still curious as to what exactly it would have entailed!

February 2018. This was the view across the Shenzhen skyline from Wonderboy’s window. It sure beat the view of my own feet back in the space capsule hotel. “Mate, the breakfast!!!” he sang in one of several excited voice messages the next morning. It turns out that in addition to an excellent Full English and a range of cereals, The Pavilion Hotel also boasts four chef-manned serving stations, including an Omelette Bar, freshly baked pastries, cookies, breads and… “A CHEESEBOARD! LIKE A PROPER CHEESEBOARD!” For a moment I feared my old friend might pass out.

February 2018. Wonderboy paid 600RMB (£67/€77/$95) for his night here (NOT including breakfast!). While checking out he was asked to complete a survey of his experience, for which he received an embroidered boxed handkerchief for his troubles. When I checked out of the Spacecraft Hotel, the dude at reception simply nodded at me and farted. For more on the excellent Pavilion Hotel Shenzhen, check out their official website.
