Welcome to Umbrella English, an online English teaching service from Teacher Leighton, Teacher Emma, and our two monster friends, Elmo and Ernie. With a combined experience of 20 years in ESL (English as a second language), rest assured we’ve got what it takes to improve your child’s English.

Our lessons are positive, dynamic and humorous, with a focus on oral communication (speaking and listening). We are firm believers of the TPR Method (total physical response), especially with beginners and young learners.

In each 25 minute class we will inspire and motivate your child through role play, games, props, chants and songs. We take special care with pronunciation, encouraging our students to express themselves with clarity and confidence. While our focus is on standard British English, we make sure to expose students to a variety of accents.

Your child is in good hands with us, we’ve been teaching Chinese kids for years. Thus we are familiar with the common errors and specific pronunciation and grammar challenges facing young Chinese learners.

We employ a wide array of materials, including internationally recognised course books, homemade flashcards, computer images, illustrations and real world props. We are also happy to work with materials from your child’s school. In fact, all our lessons are tailor-made depending on the specific needs of each student.

After every class, we provide a full report on your child’s performance, including a summary of the material covered with an audio/video guide for continued practice and review.

We named our school Umbrella English for a number of reasons. In Britain almost everyone has an umbrella, because we live on a rainy island. It is a symbol of guidance and protection. Indeed we are committed to holding the umbrella high and guiding our students through the occasional grey days and unsettled weather of language learning.

Hi, I’m Leighton, an Englishman from London. I’m a CELTA certified English language instructor with fourteen years experience teaching children, teenagers, adults and business professionals. I have taught English all over the world in countries such as Qatar, Slovakia, Spain and Cambodia.

Moreover, I spent five years of my career teaching English in China. One year at a training centre in Beijing, two years at a language school in the city of Rui’an in Zhejiang Province. Recently, I worked as a freelance teacher for the online Platform Palfish.

Teacher Emma.

Hi I’m Emma, an English-Canadian national born in Belgrade. My name is a little difficult to pronounce, so you can call me Teacher Emma! I’m a TESOL certified instructor with six years of English teaching experience.

I lived and worked in two small towns in China’s Zhejiang Province: Shuitou and Hongqiao. I spent two years teaching English in a language centre, two and a half years working in an international bilingual kindergarten with pre-school children. For the past year I’ve been working for the Hangzhou-based Freebao University, an online English learning platform.

Ernie the monster.

Ernie is a friendly monster who helps Teacher Leighton and Teacher Emma in class. He is kind, sensible, polite and helpful. He likes cooking very strange things, like sock sandwiches and pencil pizza.

Elmo the caterpillar.

Elmo is a naughty caterpillar who is often very silly in class. He gives wrong answers to questions and likes teasing Teacher Leighton and Teacher Emma. He often takes and eats their snacks when they are not looking!
