Gulangyu Island is a stunning spot in southeast China, just a short ferry ride from the city of Xiamen in Fujian Province. With great natural beauty and fascinating colonial architecture, there’s enough here for at least a full day’s exploring.

Moreover, a chic, albeit pricy hotel scene means Gulangyu serves as the perfect city escape. For the most part the vibe is relaxed, with no cars and a distinct lack of bars and nightclubs.

Furthermore, most Chinese tourists take the last ferry back to Xiamen. Hence you’ll feel like you’ve got the island all to yourself as the sun sets from one of Gulangyu’s small, secluded beaches.
