What To See & Do In Tokyo
Hyokeikan Building, Tokyo National Museum. February, 2019.
Planning your travel itinerary in Tokyo can be a daunting process. There is so much to see and do you’ll definitely need to research and prioritize to get the most out of your trip. I had thirteen days in Japan’s amazing capital and still left with a whole bunch of stuff that had to be filed in the drawer marked next time.
It was also necessary to familiarise myself with Tokyo’s many districts and neighbourhoods prior to my trip, so that I could bunch as much cool stuff together as I could for each day’s exploring. Tokyo is huge, the last thing you want to do is waste your days with unnecessary one-hour subway ordeals between sights. It’s also worth noting that this is not the kind of city where you can simply rock up and do things on the fly. Lots of stuff is closed on Mondays, some on Tuesdays and others keep strange opening hours. Many of Tokyo’s coolest attractions also require advance reservations, with some of these even insisting that a Japanese speaker handle the booking! Obstacles and roadblocks aplenty then, but fear not, it’s all worth it!

As I approach twenty years of global wanderings I can safely say that in terms of city trips Tokyo has totally blown away all opposition! Sorry NYC, I still love you. To find out what I did and saw in this wondrous metropolis, dive deep into my extensive library of location reports from across the city. Please note, this menu page doesn’t include my guide to the themed cafes and restaurants. For the full rundown of those, click here.
