"Short stories and travel reports from my life adventures around the globe".
Who is Leighton?
I’m an Englishman born in Hammersmith, London, which means I’m a QPR fan. I didn’t have a say in the matter. I grew up in Buckinghamshire, went to military boarding school in Wales and later found myself drifting across Scotland at the beck and call of my father’s job.
What am I gonna do with my life? I thought, again and again. I had no clue, but loved the idea of getting away from this rainy island and discovering the world, one country at a time.
“Congratulations!” said a woman called Laura one day, handing me a piece of paper that would change my life forever. I’ll never forget the day I became certified to teach English as a foreign language. Qatar, Slovakia, Belgium, China, The Netherlands, Cambodia… Spain… all countries I subsequently called home and places that served as springboards for further global adventures.
Writing has been in my soul since I was a kid and no matter where I went I always put pen to paper, finger to keyboard. I tried and failed to write a novel, completed a mediocre screenplay and knocked out countless album and film reviews. I never dreamt I could make a living out of it, but luckily a big bald Dutchman called Oscar thought differently.
“Welcome to your weekly dose of Hollywood Buzz!” I cried and people seemed to think I said it well. From there I became a professional voice over and writer of movie, music and celebrity news. I penned a series of actor and director biographies and interviewed the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Steve Carell, Will Ferrell, the American Pie crew, Kaiser Chiefs and Kate Nash. For a while it looked like I’d stay in Amsterdam forever, but alas the domestic dream just wasn’t meant to be and after a tumultuous period of personal rediscovery, foreign shores began wooing me once again.
What is Leighton Travels?
I think I’ve lived a pretty interesting life, with lots of cool stories to share. One by one I’ve been documenting these tales here in the My Short Stories section, colourful instalments of my life’s good, bad and ugly parts. It’s an ongoing project, with a new collection coming out every year.
In the meantime I’m perpetually busy with my ever-growing library of Travel Reports from all the places I’ve been to across the world. With over five 550 reports published there’s much to read and the library continues to grow.
