Visit Baku.

Sweeping views across the Azerbaijani capital from Highland Park.
In December 2024 Sladja and I spent two memorable weeks in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. With its beguiling cocktail of architectural influences, the city certainly keeps visitors on its toes.

On the one hand Baku stands as a veritable showroom of ultra modern landmarks. Take the Zahar-Hadid-built Heydar Aliyev Centre, for example. And the sleek curves of the Flame Towers, a trio of skyscrapers that celebrates Azerbaijan’s Zoroastrian heritage.

However, the city’s traditional heritage is also a key component of its visual appeal. In this regard Baku’s beautifully sculpted Old Town is not to be missed.

Not least with its stunning 15th century Palace of the Shirvanshahs, now an engaging museum of Azerbaijani history.

Elsewhere, there are sprinklings of Soviet art along with a splash of Dubai, Paris and… heck.. even Venice.

Visit Baku: Little Venice.
Down at Baku Boulevard meanwhile we spent the better part of an entire day just walking, walking, walking. Accompanied by locals, gulls, the ever-present Caspian Sea and an abundance of public art.

But in truth all of the above merely serves as a smattering of Baku’s varied charms. There is so much more, from the moving military memorials of Highland Park and the charming cafes of Nizami Street to the stupendous Azerbaijani Carpet Museum and beyond.
