In December 2024 I was delighted to collaborate with Bag Baku, one of Azerbaijan’s leading tour companies. During several fabulous days, Sladja and I experienced some of the country’s greatest cultural treasures by way of private tour.

It all began with an unforgettable day trip to Gobustan National Park. Led by our guide Rajab and driver Hijran, we explored Azerbaijan’s absorbing desert region 64km southwest of Baku, the capital.

It was certainly a day that’ll live long in the memory. First we paid a visit to the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex. A brand new facility opened in 2024, the centre provides a fascinating overview of Azerbaijan’s desert heritage.

Keen to add a more fly-by the seat-of-your-pants adventure, we also hired an additional driver to take us to some remote mountaintop mud volcanoes! Definitely worth the extra time and money, despite the hair-raising drive in a rickety Russian Lada.
Just us, in the desert, with some mud volcanoes.
Finally, reunited with Rajab and Hijran, we headed on to the Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve. This is where we tracked down a bunch of 40.0000 year old rock carvings and petroglyphs. They were just stunning, a breathtaking window into Azerbaijan’s prehistoric past.
