Visit Golubac Fortress.

Deep in the heart of rural eastern Serbia lies a village that most people outside the country have never heard of. Nestled on the right side of the River Danube just across from Romania, Golubac is home to under two thousand people and has no real sights to speak of.

However, there is a very good reason to come here. You see, just two and a half kilometres downstream lies one of Europe’s most spectacular fortresses.

Beautifully restored to its former glory in 2019, this 14th century delight holds court over the Danube, the undisputed queen of the waters.

Danube views from the fortress.

Naturally Sladja and I made sure to tour the fortress and absorb its incredible Danube views. Moreover, one can enjoy the fortress from the river itself with a cruise. Or from one of several nearby nature trails that lead to unmissable hilltop vistas.

In addition to the castle there are numerous sights to discover across the local region. Of these we spent an afternoon exploring Tuman Monastery, a  curious Orthodox Disneyland where sermons and holy blessings play out alongside questionable miracles, honey production and a rather depressing zoo.
