Every two to three years Sladja and I find ourselves back in Serbia. To catch up with her parents in the nowheresville town of Obrenovac. To take care of medical and admin matters in Belgrade.

In the winter of 2023 our stay turned out to be several months, far longer than anticipated (and indeed desired). Thus by the time Christmas rolled around we figured it was time to chalk off a new corner of the country. A change of scenery if you will.

It didn’t take long to decide on a visit to Niš, Serbia’s third largest city. With a lively food & drink scene in addition to highly affordable Airbnb stays, we knew this was the place for our winter break. Happily, we easily secured a modern and cosy apartment right in the heart of the city centre.

Indeed our digs were the perfect springboard for exploring the city’s many and varied sights. In fact, it was just a short walk to the other side of the river to reach the fascinating Niš Fortress, home to over two thousand years of history.

Moreover, we made sure to pay our respects at the World War II monuments of Bubanj Memorial Park. To stop by the grisly 19th century Skull Tower and walk through the incredible Roman ruins of Mediana, once a royal residence of none other than Constantine the Great!
