For Sladja and I the autumn of 2021 was an exciting period rich in new travel experiences. Based in the thriving coastal town of Tivat, we had the perfect base for exploring the region.

Following visits to the stunning island-studded village of Perast and the isolated hilltop hamlet of Gornja Lastva, our attention soon turned to another Montenegrin gem: namely the captivating town of Kotor.

Nested snugly on an idyllic bay and surrounded by towering mountains, Kotor is home to one of Earth’s most beautifully preserved medieval old towns. So impressive, in fact, that UNESCO has added Kotor’s cobbled streets and elegant stone squares to its prestigious World Heritage list.

Indeed we happily spent several days exploring its many corners, nooks and crannies. A stop by the impressive Maritime Museum, meanwhile, gave us a detailed overview of Kotor’s proud history as a Venetian port.

Moreover, we made sure to hike the incredible old city walls and beyond, all the way up to the highest viewing platform of Kotor Fortress.

Always keen to get off the main tourist trails, we also spent an afternoon walking Kotor’s lengthy promenade. Until, at last, we reached the neighbouring town of Dobrota.

It was a fabulous opportunity to witness everyday Montenegrin life while soaking up the local scenery and crossing off some of the area’s more understated landmarks.
