Visit Sarajevo A Guide by Leighton Travels

Sunset falls over Sarajevo.

In late October, 2021, Sladja and I bid farewell to Montenegro after three memorable months living and travelling around the country. Taking advantage of our location, we decided to drift into Bosnia for a monthlong stay in a capital we had long been fascinated by.

Our location was fantastic: a narrow cul-de-sac up in the hills on the eastern side of Sarajevo’s old town.

It was from here that we dove deep into the city’s cultural, historic, visual and gastronomical delights. We wandered the market lanes of the old Bazaar, dipping in and out of its many squares, mosques and museums.

What’s more, we wandered past some of Sarajevo’s finest heritage architecture along the Miljacka River before soaking up the autumnal calm of Veliki Park.

Elsewhere, we took in gorgeous panoramas from the top of the Avaz Twist Tower and explored spectacular Trebević Mountain, where twisting woodland trails run directly through the remains of the 1984 Olympic bobsleigh and luge track.

However, it would have been a disservice to the city’s history — and indeed its identity — to ignore the many sites dedicated to the Bosnian War. We therefore made a point of visiting several of the most important museums, galleries and exhibitions, as well as a number of cemeteries.
