The summer of 2021 was an incredibly exciting time for Sladja and I. After all, we had just gotten married in Serbia, while at long last the restrictions of the Covid-19 era were starting to fade out.

Having been grounded in Serbia for 11 months, we couldn’t wait to explore a new country again. Taking advantage of our location in the Balkans, we opted for a 7-week adventure in neighbouring Montenegro.

For the first month we based ourselves in the lovely coastal town of Tivat. The ideal place, it turned out, for a couple who found themselves in professional transition.

Indeed the mornings and early afternoons were for working on the early stages of launching our own online English school. The late afternoons and early evenings meanwhile saw us wandering the promenade, discovering the port and taking sunset swims on Tivat’s various beaches.

Moreover, Tivat proved the perfect base from which to discover a number of Montenegro’s magnificent highlights. Thus we made sure to pay a visit to stunning Perast with its stone churches, baroque palaces and sculpted islets.

We also made several day trips to fabulous Kotor with its UNESCO-stamped old town and 1500 year old fortress.

For our remaining three weeks in Montenegro we left Tivat to spend some time in the town of Budva, the oldest known settlement on the Adriatic coast.

Much like Tivat, Budva is beautifully positioned for further adventuring. Particularly the quite spectacular coastline of Sveti Stefan with its gorgeous beaches and fairytale island.

Yet another memorable day came in historic Cetinje with its royal palaces, stone amphitheatre and hilltop mausoleum.

And of course I will never forget the magical evening we climbed Stari Bar, the ruinous fortress that overlooks the charming town of Bar.
