In terms of cities I’ve been lucky enough to explore countless architectural powerhouses during my 24 + years of global travel.

But while you might expect such accolades for the likes of say Berlin, Chicago and Marrakesh, it’s always fantastic when one stumbles upon something of a hidden gem. In that respect, I’d like to give a shout out to the wonderful city of Subotica in Serbia.

In many ways Subotica is far from your typical Serbian city. In fact, it stands as the country’s most multicultural city home to more Hungarians than Serbs in addition to a sizeable Croat population.

This, in addition to its illustrious history as a wealthy outpost of the Austro-Hungarian empire, has left Subotica with an enviable architectural heritage. Indeed wherever you go there are delicious historic structures that look like they’ve been crafted from the hands of a particularly gifted confectioner.

Happily, we had a weekend to track down the best of these brilliant buildings. What’s more, we discovered a pleasingly leafy city that has a great food and drink scene and some striking statues and sculptures. Oh, and let’s not forget the lovely Lake Palić on the edge of town.
